2019 GOLD KEY AWARDS
BEST LOBBY LUXURY
THE DESIGN FIRM: AFSO, Hong Kong
THE MUSE: Update and globalize the Waldorf Astoria’s classic design tenets. Find sensitive (not literal) ways to give the design of this newbuild, 174-room hotel a subtle but distinctive Thai accent.
THE MAGIC: Pulling inspirations from not only the expected luxury hotel playbook (Art Deco, “The Great Gatsby” and so on), but also from carefully researched pieces of Thai culture. Two bronze screens in the entry are designed to evoke the hand movements of traditional Thai dance. Flipped-up Thai food stall shutters were the “aha” moment that drove designers to echo them in The Front Room, the hotel’s Nordic-Thai fusion lobby restaurant.
THE MAVERICK MOVE: There is a meeting point between elegance and sensuality, and this project walks that line. A restrained color palette focused on white and gold reinforces a modern, streamlined take on the kind of jet-set cool that’s always been a brand tenet. Curving shapes and touchable fabrics invite guests to feel, not just see, the sensory indulgence around them.
THE MESSAGE: Full-on glam isn’t going anywhere. From multiple show kitchens to opulent lighting arrangements, travelers in 2019 and beyond still want to feel like movie stars.
