With the intimacy of fireside lounging and the serenity of seaside views, Weare Cottage at Cliff House, Cape Neddick, Maine, was designed to envelop guests in natural comfort with a twist of understated residential luxury.

The exclusive home within the southern Maine coastal resort, Cliff House, is the first completed project from PDG Studios, the specialty division of Geneva, Illinois-based Paradigm Design Group. Launched in November 2016, PDG is dedicated to designing independent boutique and lifestyle properties versus the concepts Paradigm develops for larger hotel brands.

The original residence of the Weare family dating back to 1872, the cottage opened to resort guests for the first time in the summer of 2018. Lisa A. Haude, president of Paradigm Design Group and PDG Studios, says, “Our design pays homage to many inspirations, including the location and community, the beautiful cliffs and sea, and Weare Cottage’s historic background.”

With a brief to update the cottage without compromising its heritage, original features such as the stone fireplace, planked ceilings and shiplap walls were preserved, and reclaimed wood floors from neighboring towns were introduced. A neutral navy blue, white and tan palette paints a subtly nautical backdrop within the three-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath seaside cottage.

It’s easy to imagine memories being made in such a comfortable setting. PDG’s goal was to create a home-like destination for intimate groups such as families, wedding parties and reunions. “We incorporated fabrics and materials likely to be found in family-oriented homes—especially those with young kids running around,” says Haude. Decorative artifacts were selected to highlight local culture and history. “We paid close attention to every little detail,” she says. “Placing these fun items throughout the cottage gives the design a familiar and lived-in, yet refined and special, feel.”

PDG Studios’ next ventures include a Washington, D.C., boutique hotel slated to open by the end of 2019 and a historic Florida property currently under development.
