This collection features 12 mosaic interpretations of textile designer Kevin O’Brien’s textile designs. When O’Brien visited Japan he became fascinated with Shou sugi ban, the 18th century wood burning technique. Once home, he interpreted the charcoal coated wood into a velvet textile for his pillow collection. New Ravenna used Obsidian glass in two textures to recreate the effect of burnout velvet in Wood Grain (above). The idea that burnout velvets can be reproduced as mosaics extends their function to be installed in a shower, a backsplash, or a floor.
