Architectural firm ODA has unveiled its plans for an upcoming 5-Star Kimpton hotel in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Early last year, the firm won an international competition to redesign and restore Rotterdam’s former Central Post Office, the iconic Postkantoor, which has been vacant for more than a decade. POST Rotterdam will be converted into an adaptive reuse project featuring a 226-key Kimpton hotel on the upper floors.
ODA’s refresh aims to create a gathering place that integrates urban living with a balance of mixed uses that will result in a civic hub. The interiors, designed by ODA’s Eran Chen and Ryoko Okada, will channel an iconic, alluring, and curious spirit, revealing the playful essence of a serious building. Each design element has been inspired by the rich history of the Postkantoor, from the color palette to the furniture style. Spaces are influenced by elegant embossing on an envelope, ink dried on heavy card stock, luxurious wax seals, and the intimacy of a handwritten letter.
ODA was commissioned by international development firm Omnam Investment Group for the project, and is working closely with Braaksma & Roos Architectenbureau, widely recognized for their adaptive reuse expertise and skilled heritage assessment. ABT is serving as the local architect of record.
