Art Villas Resort in the Costa Rican jungle near Playa Hermosa consists of three unique villas and one multifunctional tropical pavilion. The resort architect is the Formafatal studio, headed by Dagmar Štěpánová. In addition to interior design, the firm imprinted the final form of each villa and united the resort into an integrated complex. Architects from Refuel works designed the concrete Art Villa, while Archwerk studio is behind the architectural concept of Coco Villa and Wing.
The two-story Art Villa (shown) comprises a common area with a foyer, main living room, kitchen with a dining room, and the roofed terrace by the pool. It also houses five bedrooms with private bathrooms. The basement has a playroom, gym, and dance hall. When designing the interiors, inspiration was found not only in the surrounding jungle but also in the work of Brazilian architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha. The concrete walls are deliberately left raw, complementing the interior components, selected materials, water, and greenery for a rough but luxurious look.
Atelier Villa was designed as a private residence for the investor and his family. A priority in the architecture was the idea of erasing boundaries between interior and exterior while highlighting constructional simplicity and pure lines. Discreet wall colors in combination with the green roof allow the villa to blend in with its surroundings. The ocean and jungle-oriented façades are fitted with large aluminum perforated sections that do not heat up in the sun and are rust-resistant. If pulled up, they double as canopies.
