SB Architects and EDG Interior Architecture + Design have unveiled a reimagined design of the historic Dr. Wilkinson’s Backyard Resort & Mineral Springs, an iconic 50-room resort and spa destination. The renovated resort officially debuted in June 2021 in the historic Calistoga, nestled in the northern tip of the Napa Valley.
Inspired by Dr. Wilkinson’s longstanding commitment to wellbeing through the use of natural minerals and elements, and deeply rooted connection to the community of Calistoga, Chartres Lodging Group’s aim as the owner was to create a new vision for the resort that respects and leverages the legendary property’s integrity and legacy. The renovation revitalized the existing hotel and spa, adding eight extra guestrooms; converting three back-of-house rooms to extra guestrooms; adding a new food and beverage modular building; and restoring three historic Victorian buildings dating back to the 1890s. A nod to its historic roots, the design aims to modernize while retaining as much of the original look, feel, and ethos of the space as possible.
The redesigned lobby has a retro-inspired sensibility featuring midcentury elements with a modern twist, custom art installations, and a water tower statement piece that celebrates the property’s mineral-springs history. The guestrooms are a modern take on midcentury modern design and harken back to the original 1950s style, with white oak floors and a warm color palette. Accents include locally made artwork and one-of-a-kind handmade pottery pieces by local ceramics studio NBC Pottery. Curated art throughout the property highlights additional local artists and pays homage to Edy Wilkinson’s beloved mosaics.
