Prepare to think outside the box and inside the cupola. Last week, we joined designers at Artaic’s invite-only launch party for its Design ‘N Gather mosaic design competition on the rooftop of the Parisian-inspired NoMad Hotel in Manhattan. The party gave attendees the chance to take a peek at the hotel’s dome-shaped private dining venue where the winning digital design will be permanently installed—and fitting the form will be no easy feat.
Straight out of the NoMad elevator we were greeted by a large open-air tent lit with chandeliers and lanterns and lined with ornate, overlapping rugs. A bassist and guitarist entertained guests and waiters passed around whiskey sours and mezcal margaritas.
Ted Acworth, founder and ceo of Artaic, stressed at the kickoff that it doesn’t matter whether you’re an established designer or still in school, anyone can submit to the blind competition. One thing all entrants must have in common, though, is innovation and creativity.
The winning mosaic will be permanently installed inside the rooftop cupola and must take into account the space’s unconventional form. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill flat, rectangular wall expanse. Designs must accommodate a spherical medallion portion of the domed ceiling and cover the areas surrounding the room’s five arched windows. The interior space is currently painted a deep navy blue and features dark drapery and accessories such as gas lights and stacked books. But this vibe shouldn’t dictate your design direction, as the room will be repainted and restyled to fit the aesthetic of the winning mosaic. The only feature that will remain is the room’s centerpiece, a brass chandelier.
Entries for Design ‘N Gather will be accepted through Sept. 1. The winning design will be selected by a panel of judges, including Hospitality Media Group (HMG) president and cofounder, Michelle Finn. The chosen design will be unveiled at Boutique Design New York (BDNY) in November and the winner will receive a trip for two to Paris, as well as a profile in Boutique Design magazine.
