Bishop House Opens at Willows

Palm Springs property nods to its 1920s heritage

The Bishop House has been completely renovated at The Willows Historic Palm Springs Inn in California, bringing the property back to its 1920s heritage. The project adds another 17 guestrooms and suites, each with a unique floorplan and design, to the complex.

The renovated home is joined to the neighboring Mead House by a footpath, similar to the one that was there in the mid-1920s. In 1924, Los Angeles architect William Dodd was commissioned to design the Spanish Revival-style mansions for best friends and prominent Angelenos, William and Nella Mead and Roland and Dorothy Bishop. The couples selected a spot where willow trees grew at the foot of the San Jacinto mountains in the center of what was then a village. As time passed, other celebrities lived in the buildings.

The Bishop House's original Gladding McBean-tiled fountain has been restored on an outdoor patio. (Gladding McBean was once the go-to place for ornate and decorative tile during the 1920s.) Revamped guestrooms at The Bishop House offer king-size beds, plush linens and bespoke furniture that nods to its original era.
