Swiss locale will be brand’s European flagship

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts will open its sixth hotel in its home country of Switzerland in 2019. High-profile Italian designer Matteo Thun is creating the look of the five-star property, which will be located in Basel and serve as the hotelier’s flagship in Europe.

Located next to the SBB railway station, the 19-story building is being designed by locally based architecture firm Miller & Maranta and will be home to 264 guest rooms and suites—including 50 Mövenpick Sleep rooms with adjustable beds. It will also feature an executive lounge with a floor-to-ceiling window front and a furnished terrace overlooking a park.

An upscale brasserie restaurant will also be on tap, and the ground-floor lobby will house a Mövenpick Wine & Coffee Lounge, showcasing natural materials and an outside seating area. Other on-site amenities will include more than 19,000 sq. ft. of meeting space, and a 5,380-sq.-ft. ballroom with a 23-ft.-high ceiling.

“With our Swiss roots and our distinctive service we’re delighted to be able to offer this very special hotel to customers in Basel,” says Ola Ivarsson, chief operating officer, Mövenpick Europe. “Our clear ambition is to become the best modern hotel in the city.”
