Stonehill & Taylor, HOK and Shawmut team on $180M reno
The InterContinental New York Barclay hotel has made its debut following a $180 million, 20-month renovation. The property, which first opened in 1926 as one of the city’s original railroad hotels, now features more than 420,000-sq.-ft. of redesigned interiors. Under the direction of the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) Design Studio, architects Stonehill & Taylor, interior design firm HOK and Shawmut Construction worked to restore the property’s original style while incorporating contemporary touches, project participants say.

Designers created a more open lobby experience leading to a new Carrara marble grand staircase, and the redesigned property features 704 guest rooms and suites reminiscent of a classic Park Avenue home. Artwork reflects the property’s 1920s past, including antique maps and early 19th century Hudson River School landscapes throughout the public spaces and guest quarters. In keeping with the property’s Federalist design motif, each guest room features eagle medallion door plates, an element that has been preserved from the original Barclay hotel.

The property also houses two ballrooms and five meeting spaces, including the 4,954-sq.-ft. Grand and 3,500-sq.-ft. Empire ballrooms, which feature 17-ft. coffered ceilings and chandeliers, as well as custom crown molding and millwork. Other venues include the brand’s Club InterContinental lounge and the Gin Parlour, a concept inspired by 1920s Dutch and English gin bars that’s set off the lobby area.
