Hotel Chaco, a contemporary luxury hotel whose design is inspired by the architecture and ancient civilization of New Mexico’s Chaco Canyon, has opened in Albuquerque’s Old Town. The 118-key property—the first from-the-ground-up design/build project by Heritage Hotels & Resorts–is located adjacent to a sister property, Hotel Albuquerque at Old Town.

Serving as the Hotel Chaco’s architect was Gensler, while its interiors were created by Kris Lajeskie. The hotel’s architecture includes intricate stone masonry, vigas and latillas for rooftop structures, and an alignment that mirrors the sun’s movement. Its interiors, meantime, feature subdued hues inspired by the natural wool variations employed by Navajo weavers, as well as an extensive set of works by contemporary Native American artists.

The hotel’s namesake and design inspiration is the Chaco Canyon National Monument, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in northwest New Mexico that’s often referred to as the “Machu Picchu” of North America.

“Typically hotels are built like stackable boxes,” notes Jim Long, founder and ceo of locally based Heritage Hotels & Resorts. “But Hotel Chaco’s design, while very modern, captures the spirit of the civilization and the beautiful architecture of Chaco Canyon. The services, ambiance and accommodations this hotel provides embrace the native people’s artistic sensibility and oneness with nature.”

The hotel’s accommodations come in 25 different configurations, and feature high ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows and balconies. Its F&B options include Level 5, a rooftop restaurant and bar named in honor of Chaco Canyon’s famed five-story Pueblo Bonito, and the lobby-level Equinox Café and Bar. The hotel also has meeting and event space, and an on-site spa is in the works.

Hotel Chaco is Heritage Hotels & Resorts’ 10th locale in New Mexico. Its other properties are: Hotel Albuquerque at Old Town and Nativo Lodge in Albuquerque; Hotel St. Francis, Eldorado Hotel & Spa, Hotel Chimayo de Santa Fe and The Lodge at Santa Fe in Santa Fe; Hotel Encanto de Las Cruces in Las Cruces; and El Monte Sagrado and Palacio de Marquesa, Taos.
